At the heart of the Starschema AWS cloud migration framework is a proprietary toolset for automating and optimizing tedious and repeatable tasks and enhancing productivity, getting you to your destination faster and at a lower cost. This battle-tested toolset allows for the automated migration and re-architecting of database objects, ETL pipelines, ingestion and visualization platforms, using AWS-native services wherever possible. It also ensures exceptional retention of data quality during the migration process even for large amounts of complex data, further reducing the time and costs involved.
Assessment and Planning
Starschema provides broad and deep preliminary assessment of workloads, peak times, potential issues and other key factors, reducing the associated burden on the client. Leveraging substantial hands-on experience with on-premises data lake solutions and a close working relationship with AWS, we then customize the migration framework to the client’s needs to ensure effectiveness. Starschema delivers a proof of concept for setting up the chosen AWS services and completes the planning phase by identifying the resources, tools and developments necessary to achieve the desired results.
Mobilization and Migration
Building on extensive experience in Tableau, Talend and HVR migrations, we develop and set up the necessary migration tools and access products using a test-driven development process. We build a metadata inventory and use a version control system for greater productivity and to make maintenance and future optimization easier. Our proprietary automation toolset includes tooling and frameworks for UDF conversion, DDL conversion and data type optimization and can save hundreds of work hours through automation while altering the source architecture to enable cloud-native services and solutions. Before going live with the new architecture, we verify the results by compiling, triggering and comparing the migrated code to the source using programmatic testing. The client can monitor and test the migration results for continuous insights on object availability, data quality and latency and more using a custom-developed browser application.
Go-Live and Hypercare
We schedule the go-live for the new, cloud-based architecture and organize the transfer of knowledge gained and employed during the migration to the customer, notifying key up- and downstream teams. By sharing best practices and documentation, we help the customer provide better in-house maintenance and optimization. Starschema provides hypercare for an agreed-on period after the cutover and helps reduce the manual labor required for monitoring and promote predictive maintenance using our state-of-the-art operation monitoring systems, future-proofing the client’s cloud environment.
